I first heard about the concept of digital gardens a while ago, and I really love the idea. It’s a place where you can store and keep track of the things you’ve learnt over time. In fact, I even tried to create one myself, but the main challenge I faced was finding the time to maintain it.
So, the big question is: are they worth it? Yes, if you’re an organised person, I suppose. That being said, I like to think of myself as organised, yet the thought of maintaining a digital garden feels overwhelming.
Personally, I prefer keeping things in lists. Whether it’s in the form of a blog post or a list of books I’ve read, that’s how I keep my version of a “digital garden” going. I guess I would much rather journal regularly (using custom taxonomies like tags to make lookups easier) than constantly find new ways to structure information.
I don’t particularly like the idea of having to go back and revise existing material. It’s difficult to keep track of everything when it’s not structured properly. One of the benefits of maintaining a blog is that you can track your progress over time. For example, you could write a blog post about learning a new skill, and a year later, write another post about what you’ve learnt so far.
